Le mani sulla città [Hands Over the City] (1963)
Director: Francesco Rosi
105 minutes
Italian; Turkish and English subtitles

Beginning with the collapse of an apartment building in a working-class district, this film zeroes in on the subsequent investigation of responsibility surrounding the disaster. At the center is Edoardo Nottola (Rod Steiger), a wealthy land developer and council member of the government’s ruling party, who is determined to keep his personal and professional interests in the building of new government housing as intertwined as possible.

Directed by Francesco Rosi, who passed away in early 2015, the film won the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival in 1963, the same year it was released.

Tehran Anar Nadarad! [Tehran Has No More Pomegranates!] (2006)
Director: Massoud Bakhshi
68 minutes
Persian; Turkish and English subtitles

Crazy, dynamic and ironic, this film takes us on a journey into the history of Tehran with Massoud Bakhshi’s film crew as they are faced with the impossibility of completing their initial project. In this both humoristic and critical portrait of a major city, Bakhshi joyfully plays with fact and fiction to depict the reality in Tehran today. From the city’s foundation to a small rural village where pomegranates still grow, from well-known oppressors to outstanding anonymous bystanders, Bakhshi succeeds in documenting 150 years of history and its contradictions.

With a combination of experimental attributes, the film includes fictional, documentary, comedy and even musical genres, making it an extraordinary documentation of urban history.

Program is free. Reservations are not accepted.

London (1994)
Director: Patrick Keiller
82 minutes
English; Turkish subtitles

London is a journal of 1992, the year of John Major’s re-election, IRA bombs and the first crack in the House of Windsor. Scathing reflections on the recent past are enlivened by offbeat humor and wide-ranging literary anecdotes. Patrick Keiller’s imaginative and highly original films each document a journey undertaken by the unseen “researcher” Robinson and his similarly unseen companion, the film’s narrator (voice by Paul Scofield).

Filmed with Keiller’s characteristic camera and sound technique, this film is a depiction of the city while under conservative rule.

Program is free. Reservations are not accepted.

Çekmeköy Underground [Arabesque Underground] (2014)

This film is a depiction of youth within a slum neighborhood in Istanbul, now transforming into luxuries suburbs. While preparing for a talent contest, at the same time they are working on an “arabesque rap” style clip, but Istanbul’s ruthless glimmer pulls a trigger on their dreams.

Underlying the story of the film, director Aysim Türkmen’s research on the city culture was discussed as part of 90, a program responding to questions about contemporary Istanbul, which took place in 2011 at SALT Beyoğlu.
